Will is an Aikido instructor ranked Nidan (2nd degree black belt) in Aikido Yuishinkai. Under James West Sensei, Will has practiced at Aikido Olympia since 2016 and now teaches there, striving to uphold his own teacher’s creative and often humorous style. Will is also a Zen instructor under Norma Ryūkō Kawelokū Wong Roshi. Taking Budo as a life practice, Will works to embody Aikido and Zen in daily life: “going through life rolling and turning like a huge boulder,” “in accord with the myriad of changes of life.”
Aikido is often translated as “a pathway for being in harmony with the fundamental energies of the universe”—even in moments of intense conflict. This class will introduce students the basic principles of Aikido: relaxation, keeping your center, and extending Ki. Since falls are among the most common sources of injury, we will cover some basic ukemi—the art of falling—including rolls and movement harmonization. Finally, students will learn simple evasion and escape techniques. Overall, this class will emphasize the development of a martial mind, body, and spirit.
